We purchased this Scout in 2005. We're the third owner and the previous two owners were from the same family. The Scout was in well-above average condition when we bought it, very stock with no modifications. Sheet metal was original, straight, and no known exterior rust. However, the Rallye decals were cracked and the green paint was faded from sun damage. Within 1 year after purchase, we had the Scout repainted to the original factory color, and we had new Rallye decals applied.
2006 Repainting: The hardtop had never been removed when we took it off for repainting. We pulled out the seats and old carpet. Front floor pan had minimal surface rust, it was cleaned and Por 15 was applied. Personally, we were very happy with the small amount of rust and how well it cleaned up. The old, cracked rallye decals were removed, entire exterior of the Scout was sanded and repainted. Once it was repainted, we had new Rallye decals applied. We used the exact same original color based on paint code. Disclaimer: We did hire out the paint job and decals, and the paint work was fairly solid, but there are some dust particles in the new paint. We were very happy with the outcome, but it certainly wasn't a $10,000 paint job. Our personal opinion is that the mint green color of this Scout is it's best eye-catching feature.
This Scout was driven home at 75mph the day we bought it, but we did go through it and tune everything up after we purchased it. Mileage is currently 29K, was about 19K when we bought it. We're not sure, but we suspect the odometer has rolled over once. We have driven the Scout >500miles a couple of times with no problems (shows and family vacations). The first few years, we drove it a fair bit to shows, family vacations/outings, etc. Has been stored in a garage since the day we bought it. It's always been a favored rig of ours, so we never drove it in the winter or when it was raining.
Scout has A/C, but it's not currently working. It did work until about 6-8 years ago, we actually saw the condenser loosing fluid. So, probably just needs a new condenser. The cruise control hasn't worked since we've owned it. The previous owner gave us the vacuum controller in a box, and we've never gotten around to attempting to fix it. We'll give you the same box containing the vacuum controller and misc. parts we got.
Fuel Injection Modification: Installed a full fuel injection kit, which included throttle body, throttle body plate, electronic fuel pump, HEI distributor, full harness, O2 sensor, and temp sensor. Also has a check engine light and OBDII port. The chip was customized specifically for this Scout. Many of you might wonder how this affected fuel efficiency - it increased the fuel mileage by maybe 1-2mpg. However, this Scout starts like a dream.every time. No choke, no tricks, no standing on your head a certain way ;) Truly, this Scout has ALWAYS started the second we turned the key since we installed the fuel injection. Funny thing is, the previous owner had installed a push button start, which we've used a time or two when the battery was low from sitting in the garage too long.
List of Known/Disclosed Issues: You won't find many 35yr old Scouts, this nice, at this price point - but we'd like to be completely up-front with condition.
Cracked front dash padFront seats need reupholstered (back bench seat is in pretty darn good shape, though!)
Scout has only been driven 100-200miles per year the last 4-5years. So, surface rust is beginning on the front lower quartersSince it's been sitting so much, valve seals are drying up, sometimes the engine puffs a little bit of smoke when it's startedSome dust particles in new paint job (has good paint, but not a stellar/perfect paint job)Front headlight buckets were already modified when we got it, to accept square healdlights
The Coolest Things About this Scout:
The factory bumper and Warn winch. Scout was purchased with the winch: It's branded Warn AND with an IH-1 manufacturer code. Comes with the factory winch controller.
Comes with the original accessory book that shows the winch available as a purchasable accessoryComes with 5 original Rallye wheels. We're pretty sure the spare might even have the original tire, and the spare might never have been used.Green paint. Seriously, if you think you get stopped a lot with your current Scout - wait til you own a bright green one. EVERYONE comments on the color. People outright stare and give a hearty thumbs up every time this thing hits the road. You'll get stopped at gas stations, and sometimes even on the road (yes, I've literally been flagged to pull over, just so people could see it!). International enthusiasts love IH's because they symbolize blue collar, hard-working, mechanically savvy, American uniqueness. This Scout, in and of itself, epitomizes all those things. We feel true joy and power when we drive this Scout.
This Scout has won numerous awards at mid-sized shows, just the way it isThis Scout is a great option at a nice price point - it can be usedexactly as it is, or you can put it back in a shop for a fullrestoration.
Why We're Selling: For the first few years we had this, we had plenty of opportunities and time to drive it around. Over the last 4-5 years, it's spending more and more time in the garage, simply because we're busier with life. We've literally watched the surface rust start on the front quarters, and the valve seals start to dry up on the motor. We've had to replace the battery because we let it sit too much. As International enthusiasts, it literally makes us sick to our stomach to watch this happen. We continually promise ourselves we'll drive it more, yet it never quite happens. We've talked about selling it for about 3 years, and could never quite pull the trigger. Now, we're constructing a fairly major addition to our home. So, it's a perfect storm of us needing some money, and wanting to see this Scout go to a new home where it can get used and/or perhaps restored even further.
Selling Details: Clear title in hand. We're real people, and we'll be fair and forthright with the purchaser if you do the same. We're a little nervous about selling it here on ebay, but many of our Scout friends who've sold lots of Scouts encouraged us to sell it here. I'm nervous that prospective buyers will think this is a perfect, brand new, fully restored Scout: It's not. This is a 35yr old vehicle, and while we've loved it and taken good care of it, it's still 35yrs old and you're getting it as is. We've tried really hard to set a fair price, because we want another person/family to have a chance at owning a nice Scout. We all know these Scouts are getting harder and harder to find, especially in good stock condition. Auction is set up with a reserve and a buy-it-now price. I probably won't tell you the reserve price, but please know that we've made a concerted effort to try and make this Scout affordable for any IH enthusiast, no matter your financial situation. We're not here to waste months to get top dollar - we've made the decision to sell (and it's a tiny bit painful to sell it), so we'd like to cut a fair, timely, hassle-free deal and move on.
$500 deposit required within 3 days of auction close: Deposit is not refundable. Remaining balance is due within 10 days by cash or cashier's check. Since we're new to ebay vehicle sales, and if you're not jerking us around, we'll consider being flexible on the time frame if you're trying to make arrangements for delivery/pick-up details, etc. At the end of the day, we just need cleared funds before we pass over the title. If you're actively working on a pick-up plan and stay in contact with us, we're completely reasonable people and we're happy to do the standard things to help you get this Scout in your hands.
We're located in Spokane, WA (that's the east side of WA, near the Northern ID border). If you have questions not answered here, please email clbencemunns@msn.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
